Antibacterial powder coating About

Anti-Microbial Powder

Most moutainchem powder paint coatings can be formulated with anti-microbial capabilities. These coatings use silver ions to inhibit the growth of mildew and spoilage-causing microbes on the powder coating.

Whats more, as silver is a naturally occurring element, the silver ions used are environmentally responsible and have been shown to offer protection against microbes that cause odor, mildew, and spoilage on the product without high toxicity to humans and animals.

Lasting Performance, Keeping Your Coatings CleanThe latest coating technologies provide your products with protection that exceeds other conventional finishes extending the longevity, integrity and aesthetic beauty of your products. Upon request, all chemicals and colours of Sherwin-Williams powder coatings can be made in antimicrobial version.

Suggested end uses for antimicrobial coatings include high touch surfaces:

Hospital furniture

Patient room and intensive care units (ICU) entrances of hospitals and medical facilities

Performance Category Performance Parameter Specification Test Method
Physical Properties Pencil Hardness H GB/T 6739
Impact Resistance 50 kgcm GB/T 1732
Flexing Endurance 2 mm GB/T 6742
Adhesive Force 0 grade GB/T 9286
Bulge Depth 6 mm GB/T 9753
Chemical Properties Salt Spray Resistance 500 hours, Grade 9 GB/T 1771
Humidity Resistance 1000 hours, slight loss of gloss GB/T 1740
Acid Resistance (5% HSO) 1 year, no color change or foaming
Alkali Resistance (5% NaOH) 30 days, slight loss of light
Antibacterial Rate 4N to 5N (99.99-99.999%)

The above tests all use 0.8mm degreased and derusted cold-rolled steel plates, with a coating thickness of 40 to 80um. The performance indicators of the coating will vary slightly with the gloss.

Antimicrobial: How it Works

The term antimicrobial refers to a substance that inhibits the growth of microorganisms to protect the coated surface. Antimicrobial powder coatings incorporate advanced silver ion technology which is proven to reduce the growth of harmful bacteria on the surface of the coatings. The silver ion technology in antimicrobial powder coatings reduces bacterial growth, providing permanent protection for the lifetime of the product. The coating does not replace the cleaning of the surface. The antimicrobial silver active is added into powder coatings during manufacture, making it a permanent feature. Silver ion technology is incredibly durable and long lasting, as long as the coating is there, the active silver will still be there. Persistence tests have shown that the antimicrobial activity of powder coatings does not decay with time. Sherwin-Williams can confirm with a special instrument the presence of the silver additive in the surface applied with antimicrobial powder coatings.

Versatile Finishing Solutions

Choose from a wide range of finishes-matt, glossy, texture, or metallic-to meet the design and functionality requirements of various industrial and medical projects. The powder's fine texture ensures uniform application and an attractive appearance in multiple color options.

Active Antibacterial Protection

This powder coating harnesses advanced antibacterial technology, proven effective against harmful bacteria like E. coli and S. aureus. Ideal for surfaces in environments requiring heightened hygiene, it provides long-lasting microbial defense, enhancing safety in medical and public settings.

Reliable Adhesion and Coverage

Certified to ASTM D3359: 5B for adhesion, it forms a resilient, durable coating over steel, aluminum, or galvanized surfaces. Its optimal particle size of 30-50 microns and recommended film thickness guarantee consistent coverage of 8-10 m2 per kilogram, ensuring efficiency and performance.

FAQ's of Antibacterial powder coating:

Q: How is antibacterial powder coating applied to surfaces?

A: The coating is typically applied via electrostatic spray onto clean, pre-treated substrates such as steel, aluminum, or galvanized surfaces. It is then cured in an oven at 180-200C for 10-15 minutes to achieve a durable finish and activate its antibacterial properties.

Q: What are the benefits of using antibacterial powder coating?

A: This coating not only provides a protective and decorative layer but also inhibits the growth of bacteria like E. coli and S. aureus, making it ideal for medical, industrial, and public settings requiring high levels of hygiene.

Q: When should I use antibacterial powder coating over conventional coatings?

A: Antibacterial powder coating is recommended when surfaces will be exposed to high-touch environments where hygiene is critical, such as hospitals, laboratories, food processing facilities, or public infrastructure.

Q: Where can antibacterial powder coating be used?

A: It can be applied to a variety of indoor and outdoor products, including medical equipment, hospital furniture, door handles, railings, and other metal fixtures that benefit from both protection and antimicrobial features.

Q: What is the recommended storage method for maintaining the shelf life of the powder coating?

A: Store the powder in a cool, dry area at temperatures below 25C, away from direct sunlight. Proper storage will maintain its effectiveness for up to 12 months from the manufacturing date.

Q: What finish options and colors are available for this powder coating?

A: Available finishes include matt, glossy, textured, and metallic. The product is offered in multiple color options, providing flexibility for both decorative and functional requirements.

Q: What is the process for achieving optimal results when using this powder coating?

A: Begin by thoroughly cleaning and pre-treating the substrate. Apply the powder evenly, aiming for a film thickness of 60-80 microns. Cure the coated item at 180-200C for 10-15 minutes for maximal adhesion and antibacterial effect.
